Railway Station postcards have always been highly sought after by collectors. Thankfully, they were well documented by the Edwardian photographers of the day who took the time to record everything they thought would bring a sale and the local railway station was a popular choice.
Back in 1981 I used to advertise for postcard collections and one day i received a local call from a model railway enthusiast who said he had a shoebox full of railway station postcards for sale. From past experience I have learned not to get too excited and thought they could be modern postcards which are not so desirable. I arrived at the house which was a 2-bed terraced. I sat down in the lounge and he passed me the shoebox. To my delight it was full of Edwardian railway stations. Mostly British but some French in there as well.
He told me someone has already offered £70.00 but wanted more so I offered £300 without hesitation which was accepted. He needed the money to buy new stock for his model railway layout which was upstairs. When I viewed the layout I could see he had knocked through into the next bedroom and the layout ran into both bedrooms disappearing under the beds. It was an amazing sight.
While upstairs he also had boxes of railway station photographs he also wanted to part with. At the time I was strictly postcards and didn’t show much interest but in the end I took them on and went home with boxes and boxes of old railway station photographs. To be honest, I didn’t know what to do with them so they were packed away at my parents house where they stayed until quite recently.
45-years later I have been slowly going through the photographs and turning them into hand-made real photographic railway station postcards for collectors. This makes them very affordable and collectable due to their postcard backs and vintage postcard size. It’s going to take me a while to get through the boxes so the website will be updated with new additions every week.
